Wind Engine
Overview | FAQ
WHO:
The Harden Foundation Salinas, California
WHAT: The Harden Foundation is
restoring a rare 114-year-old windmill and historic mill
building. The Challenge Double Header Wind Engine, built
in 1892 for Duncan McKinnon, is a masterpiece of
Victorian engineering—a mighty windmill that supplied
power to operate millstones, a grain elevator, water
pump, and a woodworking shop. It is extremely rare and
the only known surviving windmill of its kind.
WHERE: Dedicated millwrights,
carpenters, architects, and engineers are working on the
buildings and machinery at the Harden Estate at the
intersection of Ercia Street and Harden Parkway in
Salinas. The wind engine and its 30-foot blades are
being restored at the Shickel Corporation machine shop
in Bridgewater, Virginia.
WHY: The wind engine will be
operated on special occasions to allow school groups and
the community to learn about the operation of the mill,
the agricultural history of the Salinas Valley, and the
legacy and special contributions of the Harden family.
WHEN: Tours & school groups: The
restoration of the wind engine, the mill, and associated
buildings and machinery began in 2003 with an inspection
and report by renowned millwright Derek Ogden. The
restoration team has been working diligently on the
project for several years. On June 2, the wind engine
will "come home" to Salinas and take its place atop the
mill building. Installation of the repaired wind engine
will take about a week.
The wind engine, the mill, and
associated buildings and machinery are still under
restoration. The site is currently closed to the public.
Please check back to check for dates and times when the
site will be open. The Harden Foundation anticipates
this will be in late Fall 2006.
